We asked the wonderful Shery Lau, design director at Syra J. to tell us a bit more about the cosmopolitan city of Hong Kong, and asked her to share a little more about the Syra J. SS20 collection.
A true fan of her city, when asked to pick her favourite spot Shery treated us to not one, but three answers. Her first is SCAD Hong Kong. Calling the Savannah College of Art Design, “a hidden gem of Hong Kong’s heritage”. After much renovation, this neoclassical masterpiece has been transformed into a bright gallery space, perfect for housing some of Hong Kong’s finest creatives.
Taking a trip down memory lane, Shery’s next stop in Hong Kong is The Peninsula hotel. She tells us “my memories of having tea at The Peninsula with my mother became the foundation of my appreciation for the artistic expression of fashion.” Shery credits this experience for showing her “the elegance and beauty in clothes that translates to charisma and confidence, and every time I return to The Peninsula, I am once again determined to create a collection that will empower women to reach their full potential.”
Our final stop on Shery’s tour of Hong Kong is the iconic Victoria Harbour.
Speaking of her final favourite, Shery says, “nothing captures Hong Kong’s essence better than our striking skyline and juxtaposed against the majestic skyline is the harbour itself. The waves of the ocean never fail to flow calmly, soothing the intensity of city life, and offering a momentary relief from the fast-paced lifestyle we’re accustomed to.” This, Shery tells us, is where Hong Kong offers the most inspiration for her work.
Moving onto her work with Syra J., Shery says, “as a designer, I’ve always welcomed the influence of fine art and fantasy in my designs”. She continues, “everything in Syra J.’s collections is tailored to enhance the beauty of women. Women who wear Syra J. will shine with confidence, strength and beauty.”
And of the new collection? Shery tells us, “my newest collection is vibrant and stylish, telling of Hong Kong’s dynamic characteristics: ever-changing, eventful, cosmopolitan, bold, thrilling. Syra J.’s SS20 collection is comprised of a myriad of colours and tones, from pastels to neons”. She continues, “in addition to our signature use of lavish, luxurious fabrics, the SS20 collection incorporates laces and transparent fabrics to project a real sense of a romantic summer fantasy.”
