Heather Dixon founder of Feather and Find chats to Karen Radley for our latest “My Neighbourhood ” Interviews
Tell me about Feather and Find?
I began Feather & Find in 2010 in Bali, Indonesia. I had a brand previously and by the end of that journey in 2006 I felt my days in fashion were over but when I arrived in Bali some years later, I felt the magic and began designing again for the love of it. For myself initially and soon it took on a life of its own and blossomed naturally and authentically.
My love of energy in colour combined with my love of indigenous prints and the ability to work with Artisans instead of huge soulless factories brought me back to a joy feeling and I felt only good and positive energy.
At that time neutral palettes were everywhere and so my bright, color-printed dresses stood out, and my passion for indigenous prints from around the world shaped the unique personality of my designs.
I’ve always been deeply interested in ancient symbols, their meanings, and their spiritual significance. Including these elements in my designs felt natural. Sacred patterns and geometry, seen throughout history in many indigenous cultures—from Afghan Suzani to Amazonian Huni Kuin tribe prints, and most recently I collaborated with contemporary Aboriginal artists to create an authentic and powerful story of their culture that feel more meaningful and shines a light on so many issues they are facing. It allows the conversations to begin…
Favourite place for brunch:
With my schedule I prefer to lunch… at my favorite Japanese Restaurant, Indigo…
Best coffee in Bali:
Kim Soo Homewares and Art Gallery
Favourite gallery or museum:
My favorite Gallery I would say is not in Bali but in Mallorca where I spend a lot of my time. Sa Bassa Blanca Museum, Alcudia is the most extraordinary place and personal Collection by Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu.
Favourite place to shop:
I’m actually not a big shopper and save my shopping for when I travel. I love to find homeware pieces, clothing and Art that I find and love and remind me of that special place. Most recently the Medina of Essouira was fantastic where I picked up a great heavy wool multi colour poncho.
Favourite park:
There aren’t many parks in Bali…. Usually the Park is the Beach J My favorite park in the world is Lumpini Park in Bangkok… it is magical at 5am. So many people of all ages but especially the elderly. They meet in groups doing all sorts of activities from marcial art dances in colourful uniforms to having tea and singing karaoke or dancing the tango… its where I discovered and learned the movement meditation called Falun Dafa.
Favourite food market:
There is a great little market on a Sunday in Bali at La Brissa Resort selling organic veggies and artisanal products but to be honest my favorite market is the Flower Market on Colombia Road in London… love that neighbourhood!
Your sanctuary in your neighbourhood:
My home is my sanctuary. During covid I renovated my home and now I really love to be here…
This summer season I’m loving:
Spending time with family and friends…
